Hummingbirds are Back!

(stock photo)

The Hummingbirds are back and they are hungry! These little birds burn up so much energy. Please consider putting out a special feeder just for them. It is very easy to do and to maintain.

All you need to do is make a simple sugar water for them. Just remember 4 to 1. Four parts water to one part granulated sugar. I like to make small batches since sugar can mold and bacteria can grow if not eaten fairly quickly. Please do not add any food coloring. This can be harmful to the little guys. I have also found that the store bought variety of hummingbird food is not a favorite at my house. They seem to prefer the simple sugar syrup made just for them!

In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water to 1/4 cup sugar. Cook over medium heat until all sugar is dissolved, approx. 3-5 minutes. Allow to cool. Fill your feeder and watch these little birds enjoy meal after meal after meal all day long! You'll even find that you get to know the different birds and yes, I do believe they have a personality. Some are very aggressive, chasing everyone away until they fill their little belly. Some are very passive, sitting on the "fence" waiting patiently for their turn. Some are also very social, allowing others to join them at the banquet.

Please make sure your feeders are cleaned before each refill. This will insure that your hummingbirds will remain healthy throughout the season!

National Zipper Day!!!

Interesting facts about the zipper:

  • Elias Howe, who invented the sewing machine, received a patent in 1851 for an "Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure". Perhaps because of the success of his sewing machine, he did not try to seriously market it, missing recognition he might otherwise have received.
  • The man who invented the zipper was Whitcomb Judson from Chicago.
  • It took 22 years for Whitcomb to make and perfect the zipper.
  • Whitcomb started his invention in 1891 with the original design intended for shoes and was originally called a Clasp Locker.
  • The Clasp Locker was improved upon in 1905 and was called C-Curity.
  • Gideon Sundback helped Whitcomb to finally perfect the zipper.
  • In 1918 the US Navy bought 10,000 zippers to use on their new flying suit.
  • The C-Curity was finally named Zipper after galoshes that were named 'Zippers'.

Happy Zipper Day!!!

Gardener's Hands

(stock photo)

BACK IN STOCK!!!

Our Kitchen Coffee soap is back in stock and just in time for gardening season! If you're like me (and my husband) we tend to like to get our hands in the dirt without wearing gardening gloves. At the end of the day, our hands look very much like the photo above.

The Farmer's Attic has the perfect soap for gardeners, mechanics and anyone who gets their hands dirty on the job. It's our Kitchen Coffee soap!

Because of the grounds in the coffee, it works great to scrub hands clean that have been working outside in the garden and even helps to remove tough hand stains after working on greasy machinery. We even tested this soap on my husband after removing pine branches that were covered in sap. Result: Clean hands and no sticky residue!!!! Can also help to eliminate food odors like onion and garlic.

With Mother's Day and Father's Day right around the corner, would make a great gift to put into a basket along with gardening tools, car repair kits or some cooking gadgets! How about a Teacher's gift with some pretty flowers?

If you are interested in reading more about this soap or purchasing a bar for yourself or as a gift for someone, click on any of the photos above.
