Catching Up - The Splendid Sampler Sew Along

The month of March was interesting to say the least and has flown by! The last post was for block 5 of The Splendid Sampler Sew Along. I was not able to keep up with blocks 6 through 12 but will post the links below. Just click on each pic to download your patterns, get tips and maybe a bonus or two.

I spent today working on block 13, Scrap Stars. I'm continuing to forge ahead in the three colorways I used previously as you can see in the picture below. Each block timed out at approximately 1 hour. I admit that I struggled a little with the first block but then found my stride with the other two. This block is definitely not a beginner block and I think the instructions could have been just a little clearer. All told, I do like the way they turned out. Block 4 - Happy, Happy - The Splendid Sampler Sew Along

Block 4 of The Splendid Sampler Sew Along is called Happy, Happy...and who wouldn't be happy with a vase filled with flowers? The techniques used for this block are applique and embroidery, however, my first thought was to give this block a little dimension and creating Yo-Yo's for the flowers or maybe buttons or a combination of both!!! Hmmmm...what to choose?

Lots of Love

Block 3 - Lots of Love is a little trickier and takes a little more time to complete. Lots of little pieces, sewing on bias and matching of seams. Take your time and with a little patience, your block will turn out perfect! My only struggle with this block is slowing things down - from the cutting, to the sewing and the pressing. I like to go from 0-60 in no time flat (I guess that's why they call me Lead Foot Lucy!) and to have to be a little fussier made it all the more challenging for me. All in all, it took about 1 1/2 hours to complete each block. Worked up really well and I love the different colorways.

Block 3 - Lots of Love - The Splendid Sampler Sew Along

Block 3 of The Splendid Sampler Sew Along is called Lots of Love. This pattern and tutorial will includes piecing techniques and a link to create a beautiful bonus mini quilt. Wings

Block 2 of The Splendid Sampler Sew Along is called Wings. This block takes a little more experience because of the half square triangle blocks and the need to match points. These three blocks took a total of about 3 hours and I really like the way they turned out.

If you would like to embroider antenna at the points of your half square triangle, you can do that too. This will create the illusion of butterflies, hence the name Wings!

Hearts Aflutter

My first blocks in three different colorways. These worked up fairly quickly. In fact, all three were completed in about two hours. Piecing was easy and perfect for a beginner. I appliqued the hearts by glue basting the seam allowance in place and stitching with clear thread using a blind hem.
